The Politics of Free Will examines contemporary political and social discourses around free will and personal responsibility. The purpose of the blog is not to propose a complete theory of how we “should” think about these complex ideas; instead, it aims to explore how these and related notions are commonly used for a variety of explicit (and illicit) purposes. Of course, my personal views on the limitations of freedom will shape the topics I chose to write about and the color the manner in which I do so. The main questions I want to provoke revolve around how we as a society might modify our political, social, and moral beliefs if we placed less emphasis on the problematic notion of ‘freedom’ and had more awareness of the historical, contextual, and neurological influences on behavior.
